Slitting & Rewinding

Optimising Slitter Rewinders for Higher Throughput

Practical tips to reduce waste and increase uptime on slitter rewinders.

Where the time actually goes

A slitter rewinder can run fast and still deliver poor throughput if it spends too long stopped. Roll changes, knife setting, core loading and unloading often add up to more time than the slitting itself. Measuring stopped time by cause is the first step to improving it.

  • Roll loading and unloading
  • Knife positioning and changeover
  • Web threading after a break
  • Waiting for inspection or approval

Choosing the slitting method

Razor slitting — strengths

  • Simple and quick to set up
  • Well suited to thin films
  • Low tooling cost

Razor slitting — watch-outs

  • Blades wear and need regular replacement
  • Less suitable for thick or laminated webs
  • Edge quality depends on blade condition

Roll quality: winding and lay-on

Differential winding lets each roll on a shaft wind at its own tension, compensating for small thickness differences across the web. Combined with correct lay-on (pressure) roll settings, it produces firm, even rolls without telescoping or gauge bands.

Five ways to faster changeovers

  1. 1

    Pre-stage cores and knives

Prepare the next job while the current one is running.

  2. 2

    Use laser positioning

A laser light system speeds up knife and core alignment.

  3. 3

    Lift and push rolls mechanically

Reel lifters and pushers cut unloading time and reduce handling damage.

  4. 4

    Standardise settings

Store tension and lay-on settings per product.

  5. 5

    Track every stop

Log stopped time by cause and review it weekly.

Frequently asked questions

What is differential winding?

A winding method where each roll on a shaft can slip independently, so every roll winds at the correct tension even if the web thickness varies across its width.

What causes telescoping rolls?

Usually incorrect tension or lay-on pressure, or poor core alignment. Check winding tension first.
